Social Media is Harming the Health Mental of
Teenagers
Social media are the websites and
applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in
social networking. Social media like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook,
and many others nowadays are becoming best friends for teenagers. They can’t be
separated with their gadget to access their social media they have. Social media
is also becoming ‘their world’. Because they spend more their time to online in
their social media than to have a real socialization with their surrounding. Most
teens now have smartphones where they are on social media networks all
throughout the day. Any conditions that they pass, the usually update it to
their social media. They are constantly texting, tweeting, and posting pictures
via Snapchat and Instagram. However, social media is not good for them.
A bad impact for teenagers if they are
addicting with their social media is, social media is harming the mental health
of teenagers. A new study has found that teenagers who engage with social media
during the night could be damaging their sleep and increasing their risk of
anxiety and depression (www.theguardian.com).
Teens are so emotionally invested in social media that a fifth of secondary
school pupils will wake up at night and log on, just to make sure they don’t
miss out. Perhaps the worst thing about this is that teenagers need more sleep
than adults do, so night-time social media use could be detrimental to their
health. Research has shown that teenagers need 9.5 hours of sleep each night
but on average only get 7.5 hours. A lack of sleep can make teenagers tired,
irritable, depressed and more likely to catch colds, flu and gastroenteritis. Not
only that, social media is also press teenagers to be perfect. To look perfect,
act perfect, have the perfect body, have the perfect group of friends, the
perfect amount of likes on Instagram. Perfect, perfect, perfect. And if you
don’t meet these ridiculously high standards, then the self-loathing and
bullying begins. What is really worrying is that time and time again, these
studies pop up and demonstrate that the mental health of teenagers, especially
teenage girls, is on the line. Parents’ support to limit their online time is
needed, because if their online time not be limited their mental health will be
getting worse.
Social media is dangerous for teenagers.
Teenagers who should spend their time with any positive activities, nowadays
they are not. They are online in their social media all the time. They don’t
care about something around them, but they care about something that far from
them. If they still spend their time in their social media, they will be in
problem. Because it can harm their mental health. So, parental monitor to limit
teenagers online in social media needs to be done from time to time.
